Mass Disaster Drill at Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport - KCBD 5/15/2008

Photos from exercise.

First responders were called to the scene of a downed 747 at the Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport Thursday morning. However, the call-out was not real. Instead, it was part of a full scale mass casualty exercise as required by the FAA every three years.

Airport agencies were joined by the Lubbock Police Department, the Lubbock Fire Department, EMS, and troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety. The American Red Cross and Lubbock Medical Examiner's office participated as well.

"Communication is always a key in something like this. Communications between different agencies," said Lt. Chris Daniel. "If we can work together through an event like this, and learn what each department is responsible for, it's going to help things run smoother in the future should something like this happen."

Authorities are now evaluating the effectiveness of this drill and looking for areas needed for improvement.
