Red Cross volunteers were on hand last night to assist the 17 people affected by a fire at an apartment complex in central Lubbock. The team of 13 volunteers was on scene with supplies within 45 minutes of getting the fire call. They helped the victims with paperwork, making sure they'll receive as much assistance as possible.

Volunteers say their job is not only to file official disaster reports but to also be a shoulder to lean on in tough times. Says Disaster Chair Bill Curnow, "I like to refer to it as a servant's heart, these are people who, whether or not we're here, need help, so if anyone is going to help them, why not myself? Why not one of our other volunteers?"
